New Elementary Boundaries in 2009-10; Oak Creek and Johnson Ranch
Opening in August
Two new schools are opening in Comal ISD this August. Oak Creek
Elementary opens on Goodwin Lane in New Braunfels and Johnson Ranch
Elementary opens at Hwy 281 and FM 1863 in Bulverde. Both campuses
will serve kindergarten through 5th grade.
With new schools come new boundaries. Oak Creek’s opening means that
Hoffmann Lane and Goodwin Frazier’s boundaries have been adjusted.
Johnson Ranch’s opening means that Specht and Rahe Bulverde’s
boundaries have been affected.

Principal Appointments Announced
New schools also mean new principals.
Linda Harlan, Specht Elementary’s current principal, will open
Johnson Ranch Elementary this August. Her appointment was announced
last week but she will finish the year at Specht.
Harlan has been with the district since 1995. She has been an
assistant principal or principal at Frazier Elementary, Arlon Seay
Intermediate, Spring Branch Middle, and Specht.
A principal for Oak Creek Elementary, also opening this August, will
be announced later this semester.
The district also has announced that Betsy Nash, Freiheit
Elementary’s principal since it opened in 2007, will open the new
elementary school in Avery Park when it opens in August 2010. The
new school will be built starting this summer in the Avery Park
subdivision off Texas Hwy 46 toward Seguin.
Avery Park will relieve Freiheit and accommodate grades kindergarten
through 5th grade students. It is an extra school being built
through bond savings and interest accrued in Bond 2005.
Nash has been with the district since 2003. In addition to Freiheit
she has been principal of Goodwin Frazier Elementary.
Update on Property for Elementary School in Garden Ridge
Speaking of new schools opening, the school board recently tabled
action on the earnest money contract for the 18 acres of land for
the future elementary school in Garden Ridge, at the corner of FM
3009 and Municipal Pkwy. The reason? Among other things, the City
of Garden Ridge has told the district that it will have to supply
its own water and that parents and visitors will have limited use,
if any, of Municipal Pkwy. Negotiations are ongoing with city
officials but the opening of the new school, to replace Comal
Elementary, could be delayed from the scheduled opening in August
2010 depending on how soon resolutions reached.
